KUALA LUMPUR – The entire nation is abuzz with the news of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) receiving a significant RM5 million boost from the federal government, a move prompted by the stellar performance of Harimau Malaya in the 2023 Asian Cup.  

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made this announcement in the wake of Harimau Malaya’s thrilling draw against Asian powerhouse South Korea in the final Group E match in Qatar. 

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh justified this financial injection, citing the substantial costs associated with football development.  

While acknowledging the financial needs of various sports, Hannah emphasised the unique demands faced by football. 

Highlighting the widespread enthusiasm for the sport, she pointed out that over 60,000 people attended large-scale screenings organised by her ministry for Harimau Malaya’s matches at the Qatar Asian Cup across 16 locations nationwide. 

“I’m not saying that other sports don’t need funding…everyone needs funds.  

“That is why we need to look at the ecosystem even though the grant allocated for football is high,” she explained.  

Hannah underscored the financial challenges faced by FAM, especially when compared to other nations in Group E – such as Jordan, Bahrain, and South Korea, where Malaysia have the lowest spending. 

She added that without adequate support, it would be challenging for the national football governing body to secure funding independently, hence the government’s crucial role in providing assistance. 

In the recent game against the 23rd-ranked Taeguk Warriors, Harimau Malaya displayed resilience and grit, securing a 3-3 draw.  

Goals from Faisal Halim, Arif Aiman Hanapi, and Romel Morales not only showcased the team’s prowess but also became a source of national pride at the continental championships. 

Despite leaving Qatar with only one point, Malaysia currently hold the bottom position in Group E, having faced earlier defeats of 4-0 and 1-0 against Jordan and Bahrain, respectively. – January 26, 2024
