KUALA LUMPUR — It is a historic feat as Malaysia clinched the silver medal in the first-ever FIH Hockey5s Men’s World Cup held in Oman in a nail-biting clash against the Netherlands at the Hockey Oman Venue in Muscat.

Despite their best efforts, the Malaysian national squad succumbed to a 2-5 defeat in the intense 30-minute encounter.

Guided by coach Wallace Tan, the Malaysian team faced formidable competition from Gerold Hoeben’s Dutch side, who mirrored the success of their female counterparts by claiming victory earlier in the tournament.

The early minutes saw the Dutchmen take the lead with Van Der Drift Yannick scoring within a minute.

Undeterred, the resilient Malaysian squad, under the captaincy of Anuar Akhimullah, quickly equalised a minute later.

However, the Dutch squad was not satisfied with parity, regaining the lead through Reyenga Pepijn in the 6th minute, followed by another goal from Yannick in the 13th minute.

In the second half, Malaysia narrowed the gap with Omar Muhammad scoring in the 16th minute.

Despite Malaysia’s efforts, the Dutch team sealed the victory with two more goals from De Wijn Sander (26’) and Van Aart Jamie (28’), dashing Malaysia’s hopes of claiming the title.

Earlier in the competition, the Netherlands defeated India in the last-eight playoff and overcame host nation Oman in the semi-final to secure their place in the final.

Meanwhile, Malaysia displayed resilience by overcoming Trinidad and Tobago and a spirited Poland on their journey to the gold medal match.

The bronze medal was secured by host nation Oman in a separate match earlier in the evening. — February 1, 2024
