JDT on top of Southeast Asia ranking, shakes up Asian club hierarchy

According to Opta, Southern Tigers now also 16th in Asia, surpassing Urawa Red Diamonds, FC Seoul

KUALA LUMPUR – Johor Darul Ta’zim FC (JDT) currently holds the top spot in Southeast Asia, as per the latest rankings from leading sports data provider Opta Analyst. 

In a surprising turn of events, JDT has now secured the 16th position in the list of the best clubs in Asia, surpassing notable Asian teams such as Urawa Red Diamonds and FC Seoul. 

“JDT is now ranked 319th in the world, 16th in Asia, and first in Southeast Asia based on the Opta Power Ranking released on February 2. 

“The football analysis website ranks almost 13,500 football clubs. No other teams from Malaysia made it to the Top 1000, with other Malaysian League teams positioned at 1,499th or lower,” the club shared through its social media posts.

In the global club ranking, Opta Analyst confirmed that JDT holds the 319th spot in the world with a rating of 75.8. 

The second-best Malaysian club is Selangor FC, which is ranked 1499th globally with a rating of 65.5. In terms of the Asian position, Selangor ranks 153. 

Malaysia’s third and fourth-best clubs are Terengganu FC and Sabah FC. Terengganu is ranked 218th in the Asian category, while Sabah is ranked 220th in the same category. 

JDT holds the record for winning 10 consecutive Malaysia Super League titles since 2013. 

Last season, the Southern Tigers also secured their second consecutive treble after defeating Terengganu FC 3-1 in the Malaysia Cup final at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in December. – February 5, 2024
