Malaysian cards second-round 65 on a day where ‘everything went according to plan’

SERI KEMBANGAN – The Malaysian Open has seen a major shock as local golfer V. Khavish Varman shares the lead with Australia’s Kevin Yuan after the second round today at the Mines Resort and Golf Club.

Khavish, who was tied with compatriot Gavin Green in fourth yesterday, carded a second-round score of six-under-par 65.

His bogey-free round, at the season-opening tournament of the Asian Tour, included six birdies on the 3rd, 4th, 7th, 11th, 15th and 17th holes for an overall total of 13-under-par 129.

Playing in his first tournament after turning pro last month, Khavish revealed that everything went according to plan for him today.

“It went according to plan but it was not an easy round. The wind was a bit strong today, and I was struggling with some numbers. However, I have to admit that my ball striking was really good.

“I stayed patient and was trying to drop a birdie every three holes, and I did that exactly, so I’m pleased with myself. Nothing changed from yesterday; I just stuck to my game plan,” the 23-year-old told reporters after completing his round.

Meanwhile, Khavish is in a good position going into the weekend as he aims to be the first Malaysian to win the tournament.

“It feels great, obviously I’m Malaysian, and to win your national open is like a Major to me, so I am excited for the weekend. The only thing different now as a pro is that you get prize money.

“Playing professional golf takes you to the next level, and that is where I wanna be. So it is very exciting for me,” he said.

Khavish is also in pole position to qualify for the British Open as the top three finishers here will book an automatic spot to play at the Royal Troon Golf Club, Scotland in July.

At the same time, Khavish’s compatriot Green did not have a good day as he failed to make the cut after finishing the second round tied in 91st place with 15 others with a total of two-under-par 140. – February 16, 2024
