Malaysian Open: ‘ugly day’ as Khavish Varman’s pursuit for title ends

Struggling with damaged nerve on neck, golfer gets 13th place, tied with eight others with fourth-round score of 3-under-par 68

SERI KEMBANGAN – V. Khavish Varman could only describe his final round at the Malaysian Open at the Mines Resort and Golf Club today as “ugly”.

The Malaysian shot six birdies but also added three bogeys for a fourth-round score of 3-under-par 68 which places him in 13th place tied with eight others.

“My day…it was ugly, I just tried to put a score in. I had the start that I wanted but I was hitting the ball terribly today.

“After that, I was just trying to get to the end but I made silly bogeys.

“At least I put up a good number today but it wasn’t the best,” said the 23-year-old.

Khavish Varman, who has been struggling with a damaged nerve in his neck for the past three years, shot three bogeys on the sixth, 12th and 17th holes which hurt his chances to get into contention.

“I hit a good drive on 17 but my second shot was disgusting and I ended up with a six.

“I gave it my all on the back nine and I don’t care how I was hitting it, I was just trying to get the ball to go in as quickly as possible. I did my part but I have got a lot of work to do.

“Overall I’m pleased with how I played this week, after my injury and stuff it is good to see that I’m in contention and it is just a matter of time before I start playing excellent golf again,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ervin Chang just could not get anything going after carding a round of 2-over-par 73 which sees him finish in 52nd place tied with five others.

His round included three birdies, one bogey and two double bogeys.

“First and foremost, thank you to all the Malaysian fans who came out to watch us play and support your local players. That means a lot to us.

“I just couldn’t get anything going. I started okay but just couldn’t get a lot of things going like yesterday. I thought I could come back even par today.

“It’s a little frustrating and hard to take, but overall I think I am okay and looking forward to the next event in Oman.

“The whole experience this week was nice. It was great playing in my local national open. I wish I could have done better, but that is golf,” said Ervin.

Until now, no Malaysian has ever won the home open, with the closest being the late P. Gunasegaran who finished second in 1994. – February 18, 2024
