Bayern Munich to part ways with manager Thomas Tuchel at season’s end

He joined the team last March and signed a contract that should have lasted another season

KUALA LUMPUR – Bayern Munich’s managerial helm will see a change at the conclusion of the current season as Thomas Tuchel is set to depart the club.

The 50-year-old, who took over from Julian Nagelsmann in March last year, initially signed to stay on until June 2025.

However, both parties have decided on an early separation as part of what the club calls “a sporting realignment.”

In a statement today, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said that the decision stemmed from a constructive dialogue between the club and Tuchel.

“Our goal is to carry out a sporting realignment with a new coach for the 2024-25 season,” read the statement.

“Until then, every individual in the club is expressly challenged to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga.

“I also explicitly hold the team responsible. Especially in the Champions League, we are convinced after the defeat at Lazio we will advance to the quarter-finals with our fans behind us.”

Despite securing the Bundesliga title under Tuchel’s leadership last season, Bayern currently trails league leaders Bayer Leverkusen by eight points following consecutive defeats.

A significant blow came in the form of a 3-0 loss to Leverkusen, compounded by a 1-0 defeat against Lazio in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter.

Acknowledging the forthcoming departure, Tuchel reaffirmed his commitment to delivering success until the end of the season, alongside his coaching staff.

The seasoned manager, who has previously overseen teams like Paris St-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, expressed determination to maximise achievements during the remainder of his tenure at Bayern Munich. – February 21, 2024
