KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) is in search of a new chief executive officer following the departure of S. Nishel Kumar.

The 46-year-old, who was a gold medalist in the 1999 Brunei Sea Games during his time as a player, has returned to the National Sports Institute (NSI), where he previously served as the head of the commercial branch.

Nishel was appointed CEO by the governing body in March last year to oversee several tournaments, including the FIH Men’s Junior World Cup (JWC), held in Bukit Jalil last December.

MHC president Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said that Nishel has also been appointed as an executive board member in the governing body, and they are searching for the right candidate to assume his CEO role.

“Nishel carried out his duties exceptionally well, and we have appointed him as an MHC executive board member.

“We need his expertise on the board, and I believe that he will definitely contribute his best ideas to improve things in our association.

“We will continue our search for a new permanent CEO, and we will make an announcement in the days to come,” said Subahan during a press conference at the Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium today.

Penang Hockey Association secretary V. Jayanandan has been appointed as the acting CEO until further notice.

For the record, 18 players represented the national junior hockey team at the JWC held at the National Hockey Stadium from December 5 to 16 last year. 

Under Nishel’s purview, the team set out to reach the quarter-finals but concluded their campaign in 12th position with only two wins out of six games, marking their worst finish as tournament hosts since 2009. – March 3, 2024
