Men's doubles pair secures comfortable victory after Germany's Mark Lamsfuss-Marvin Seidel retires from match at 12-12 in first set

KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles players Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik advanced to the second round of the French Open at Port de la Chapelle Arena yesterday.

They did not have to work too hard after German pair Mark Lamsfuss-Marvin Seidel retired from the match with the score at 12-12 in the first set.

Aaron and Wooi Yik will face Lee Fang-chih-Lee Fang-jen of Chinese Taipei in the second round of the Super 750 event.

Earlier, Fang-chih-Fang-jen defeated national pair Goh Sze Fei-Nir Izzuddin Rumsani  21-19, 21-17, in straight sets to book their spot in the second round.

Independent pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi were drawn against current world number one Satwiksairaj Rankieddy-Chairag Shetty from India.

They troubled the Hangzhou Asian Games gold medalists in the second set but ultimately succumbed to a straight sets defeat of 21-13, 24-22, in 47 minutes.

Rankireddy-Shetty will face another Malaysian pair in the second round after world number 18 national pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun beat their Canadian opponents.

The Malaysian doubles barely broke a sweat against Kevin Lee-Ty Alexander Lindeman, defeating them 21-16, 21-8, in straight sets. The match lasted for 25 minutes.

However, in the women’s singles, independent shuttler Goh Jin Wei was sent packing by China’s Wang Zhiyi 21-10, 21-15, in 28 minutes. – March 6, 2024
