All England: Aaron-Wooi Yik ‘unsatisfied with match’ despite booking quarter-finals spot

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia’s leading men’s doubles duo, Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, battled their way into the quarter-finals of the prestigious All England tournament earlier today, yet voiced some dissatisfaction with their performance.

Ranked fifth globally, the pair faced a tough challenge against the 39th-ranked duo from Chinese Taipei, Chang Ko-chi and Po Li-wei.

Despite securing the first set with a score of 21-18, they encountered difficulties in clinching the match in straight sets, ultimately prevailing in the second set with a narrow 24-22 victory.

Aaron acknowledged the unexpected turns on the court, attributing some of their struggles to unforeseen moves and unforced errors.

However, their determination proved decisive in securing the win.

“This marks our second quarter-final appearance here at the All England, but today’s match wasn’t up to our usual standard due to several unforeseen circumstances and unforced errors,” Aaron said in a post-match interview with BWF.

“But we must regroup and focus on our upcoming match against either Indonesia or India.”

Nevertheless, their triumph signifies progress compared to previous editions of the Super 1000 event.

While they reached the finals in their debut appearance in 2019, finishing as runners-up to Indonesia’s Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan, subsequent performances saw a decline, reaching the quarter-finals in 2020, the second round in 2022, and the first round in 2023.

Their journey in the world’s oldest badminton championship grows tougher as they prepare to face Indonesia’s ninth-ranked duo, Muhammad Shohibul Fikri-Bagas Maulana, who defeated India’s top-ranked pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, in the second round. – March 15, 2024
