Coach’s orders: no Raya indulgence for rugby sevens squad ahead of championship

Players set to face gruelling fitness training after return from Aidilfitri holiday

8:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia rugby sevens head coach, Nik Safuan Ismade Nik Man, has sternly reminded his players not to overindulge in festive treats during the coming Aidilfitri, as it may compromise their fitness levels for the SEA 7s Championship in Singapore on May 2 and 3.

Speaking to Scoop, Nik Safuan said that all the players had been granted leave since yesterday and were expected to return for national squad training on April 14.

Upon their return, rigorous fitness training awaits them, with severe consequences looming for any lapses.

Nik Safuan added that he had to take this action as they had less than three weeks left to prepare for the SEA 7s Championship, which marks Malaysia’s inaugural international competition for the year.

Competing alongside Malaysia are Indonesia, the Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Brunei, Chinese Taipei and hosts Singapore.

“Although they are now on leave, they still need to follow the training programme we provided them while they are in their respective home towns.

“So, they not only need to watch their diet during Hari Raya but also ensure that they remain fit and at their best so that when training resumes, they will not have any problems readjusting.

“Upon resuming training, the players will be subjected to fitness evaluations such as the yo-yo or bronco tests, and those unable to meet the standards will face disciplinary measures.

“The target set by Malaysia Rugby for myself and the team is to secure a berth in the final,” said Nik Safuan.

The SEA 7s Championship will also serve as a crucial platform for Nik Safuan to assess the capabilities of his squad in preparation for their main mission this year, the Asian Rugby Seven Series, set to commence in South Korea in September.

Malaysia achieved a historic milestone last year by securing the bronze medal at the third leg of the Asian Rugby Seven Series in Bangkok, Thailand, after a victory against the United Arab Emirates. – April 6, 2024
