Zii Jia, Tze Yong to play in Thomas Cup

This follows speculation over the former’s participation in team tournament

11:24 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Independent men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia and national player Ng Tze Yong have been included in Malaysia’s Thomas Cup squad.

Former world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik will lead the charge for the men in the premier team competition, which is set to be held in Chengdu, China from April 28 to May 5.

“World number 18 Tze Yong has been provisionally cleared by the medical team pending final assessment and has secured his spot in the squad,” said the Badminton Association of Malaysia in a statement today.

Cheam June Wei, Leong Jun Hao and Justin Hoh complete the men’s singles line-up for the country.

Joining Aaron and Wooi Yik in the men’s doubles are Nur Izzuddin Rumsani-Goh Sze Fei.

Muhammad Haikal Nazri has also been included but without his partner Choong Hon Jian.

Haikal will most likely be paired with the other doubles player if there are any injuries.

The Uber Cup squad will be made up of singles players Goh Jin Wei, K. Letshanaa, Siti Nurshuhaini Azman, Wong Ling Ching and Siti Zulaikha Azmi.

In the doubles, Teoh Mei Xing will lead the charge with Go Pei Kee, Tan Zhing Yi, Ho Lo Ee and Chan Wen Tse.

National coaching director Rexy Mainaky emphasised that player selections were made after thorough discussions with the coaching staff.

“We have been closely monitoring the players during training in recent months. After evaluating their condition and form, the coaching team has finalised the squad.

“I am confident that the selected players are eager to compete in the most prestigious team event in the world. Our players will undoubtedly give their best in China.

“Some younger players in both the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup squads will be determined to prove themselves and deliver strong performances,” he said. – April 12, 2024
