KUALA LUMPUR – Swim queen Nurul Huda Abdullah has been appointed as the chairman of the Safe Sport Committee at the Youth and Sports Ministry, the National Sports Council (NSC) announced today. 

The Olympian, who represented the country at the 1988 Seoul Games, is a 22-time SEA Games gold medalist and Malaysia Aquatics’ assistant secretary. 

With her appointment, she vacated her seat on the NSC’s Management Board, making way for former national hockey player S. Suriaghandi. 

Suriaghandi, who represented Malaysia at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, brings extensive corporate experience to the table. 

He has held key positions such as chief transformation officer and group chief operating officer at KPJ Healthcare Group Bhd. 

“He has also held several senior positions at major corporations like Khazanah Nasional Bhd, Singapore’s Parkway Healthcare Group, Pantai Hospital Group, UK’s Salcon Green Energy and Shell Malaysia Retail Real Estate. 

“The Olympian holds a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business,” said the NSC in a statement. 

Hazlina Ab Aziz from the Finance Ministry will fill the other seat on the NSC’s management board, succeeding Idwan Ariff Abdul Rahman, who has served the council for three terms. 

Both Suriaghandi and Hazlina will commence their term on May 1 and serve until April 30, 2026, while the other members of the board will continue for the new term. – April 29, 2024
