KUALA LUMPUR – Former world number one men’s doubles player Tan Wee Kiong has acknowledged that his time in the international badminton arena is nearing its end as he approaches the twilight of his career. 

However, he is determined to clinch one more championship title before the curtains close. 

Wee Kiong did not deny that this could be his last Malaysia Masters tournament after he and his partner, Nur Azryin Ayub, were shown the exit by young pair Haikal Nazri and Choong Hon Jian in the first round yesterday. 

“This could possibly be my last Malaysia Masters. Every year, there are only two tournaments held here (Axiata Arena), including the Malaysia Open. 

“I myself am uncertain whether we will have the opportunity to qualify for such tournaments next year. 

“As for my retirement plans, I’m not sure. It all depends on various factors, including sponsorship opportunities.” 

“I didn’t set a specific timeline for my retirement, but time flies quickly. So for me, I cherish every moment I spend on the court, whether it is during training sessions or tournaments.”

“I hope to achieve one more outstanding result before I retire. That has always been my goal, but it seems we need to strive harder,” said Wee Kiong. 

Since teaming up with Azriyn Jun last year, the duo has yet to make it to the finals. 

Their best attempt was during the Kuala Lumpur Masters held last November, where they managed to advance to the semi-finals. 

The last time Wee Kiong tasted victory was five years ago when he won the Chinese Taipei Open 2019 with Goh V. Shem. 

Moreover, throughout their partnership, both of them have achieved various successes. This includes winning the silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and being the last Malaysian players to win the Finals Super Series – now known as the World Tour Finals. 

“I still remember the feeling of being a champion, and it feels like it happened just yesterday. 

“But this is something I cherish as a memory. For me, any player stepping onto the court aims for victory. 

“I admit, sometimes I think about it (being a champion) before going to bed at night,” he added. – May 22, 2024
