Last minute call turns Hasmunirah into world lawn ball champion

Stepping in for her senior, she triumphs at International Bowls for Disabled World Championship, clinching gold in B2 women's singles category

SEPANG – Malaysian lawn ball para-athlete Hasmunirah Maliki never expected that being called to join the Malaysian squad early last month would change her fate and propel her to become a world champion.

Hasmunirah emerged victorious to clinch the gold medal in the B2 women’s singles category at the International Bowls for Disabled World Championship held in Erguhulani, South Africa. 

Yet, her triumph was not handed to her on a platter. She had to maintain unwavering consistency throughout six rounds, accumulating a total of 12 points to secure the gold medal.

The silver medal went to the host country’s representative, Michelle Eshun, while Louise McClean from Canada clinched the bronze medal. 

However, for Hasmunirah, the journey to victory was unexpected, especially as she had to step into the shoes of her senior, Jariah Zakariah, who withdrew at the last minute to fulfil her pilgrimage to Mecca.

This responsibility weighed heavily on her, especially considering Jariah’s esteemed reputation, having clinched the bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games last October.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to compete in this World Championship, stepping in for the athlete who was initially slated to participate but had to withdraw for the pilgrimage at the eleventh hour.

“I am grateful for being given the opportunity to compete in this World Championship, replacing the athlete who was supposed to go but had to leave for the pilgrimage at the last minute.

“I never expected to win the gold medal and achieve an undefeated record in this championship, so I am truly speechless.

“I was only informed a week before, luckily, I was still training at Bukit Kiara, although it was not enough, but my stamina was still there.

“Actually, it was a very heavy responsibility, but I am relieved that I was able to fulfil it well.

“For me, this gold medal is very meaningful because it is a gift to those around me, especially my family, who have supported me a lot, and the Malaysian Disabled Lawn Ball Para Association, which has provided guidance and assistance to me during training sessions,” said Hasmunirah when met at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport today.

This marked Hasmunirah’s debut appearance on the world championship stage.

In addition to Hasmunirah’s triumph, Muhamad Ayub Mohd also brought home gold in the B2 men’s singles category, while Mohd Zamrie Hasan contributed a bronze medal in the B2 mix singles category. – June 3, 2024
