Speedy Tigers win battle but lose war: no Nations Cup semi-finals

Their 4-2 victory over Canada not enough to secure semi-final spot, with Pakistan edging them out on goal difference

8:30 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Despite clinching a 4-2 victory against Canada last night, the Malaysian hockey team fell short of securing a spot in the Nations Cup semi-finals.

In the match held in Gniezno, Poland, Sarjit Singh’s determined squad struck early in the second minute with a goal from Faizal Saari.

Just four minutes later, the Speedy Tigers extended their lead with a goal by Azraai Aizad Abu Kamal.

As the game progressed into the second quarter, there was no sign of the national team easing off. Defender Syed Syafiq Syed Cholan capitalised on a penalty corner opportunity to stretch Malaysia’s lead to 3-0 in the 22nd minute.

However, Canada, led by Patrick Tshutshani, refused to concede defeat and fought back, resulting in Dhillon Roopkanwar scoring the first goal for the Red Caribou in the 41st minute.

Despite Malaysia’s pressing need for more goals, they managed to add another through Muhajir Abdul Rauf in the 44th minute, making the score 4-1.

Yet, the goal-scoring momentum of the Speedy Tigers halted there as they failed to capitalise on further opportunities.

Instead, Canada scored another consolation goal through Sidhu Maansarovar at the end of the match, making the final score 4-2 until the final whistle blew.

“We started well in the first and second quarters, but the team’s performance declined in the third and fourth quarters. We missed many opportunities and were not clinical in the D area.

“The yellow card clearly affected the team’s momentum. The management of the cards by the players was disappointing, and such things cannot happen again in the next game.

“It’s still a good result for the team. Many new faces are playing in the Nations Cup, but the performance is not consistent. We trust the process.

“We will rest, analyse the game, and go for the win in the next game,” said Sarjit.

Despite Malaysia’s victory and collecting a total of four points after three matches, the national team could not surpass Pakistan, who currently sit at the second spot in Pool B.

Currently, Pakistan has amassed four points after two matches. Their upcoming clash against group leaders France will not jeopardise their semi-final prospects, as they maintain a seven-goal difference over Malaysia. – Jun 6, 2024
