KUALA LUMPUR – It is a do-or-die mission for the Malaysian rugby team as they gear up for a crucial match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Asia Rugby Championship on June 21 at the Sevens Stadium in Dubai.

This match is pivotal for Malaysia’s hopes of remaining in the Asia Rugby Championship Premier Division, a status they have held since 2018.

Malaysia’s journey in this year’s championship has been challenging, with heavy defeats against South Korea (5-55) and Hong Kong (6-70).

In contrast, UAE showed resilience by defeating South Korea 36-32 after a loss to Hong Kong (5-52).

“It was a shock that UAE managed to beat South Korea, but in rugby, an underdog victory always comes as a surprise.

“Looking at the players representing UAE, we know they use naturalised players or expatriates, which enabled them to give a fair challenge to Korea and eventually win,” said former Malaysian Rugby secretary-general, Amrul Hazarin Hamidon.

UAE’s surprising victory over South Korea has made Malaysia’s task even more daunting.

As such, Amrul emphasised the importance of the Malaysian team winning against the UAE to ensure their stay in the Premier Division.

Despite the tougher circumstances, he sees this as a beneficial wake-up call for the Malaysian team.

“It’s a good signal for Malaysia as it gives us time to prepare. UAE is not a team to be underestimated when Malaysia faces them,” he added. – June 11, 2024
