KUALA LUMPUR – Within hours of Selangor Sultan Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah expressing displeasure towards the Malaysia Football League (MFL), deputy president of the Selangor Football Association, Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar, made a surprising decision to resign from the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM).

Shahril had been appointed as a FAM executive committee member for the term 2021 to 2025. He was tasked with chairing the sponsorship and marketing committee, and also served as the manager of the national under-23 squad.

Speaking to Scoop, Shahril clarified that his decision to resign was unrelated to the Selangor Sultan’s decree as he had already submitted his resignation earlier in the morning before the decree was issued.

He also said he maintains a good relationship with FAM president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin, though he did not disclose specific details behind his decision.

“I submitted my resignation this morning, and whatever the reasons may be, only Datuk Hamidin and I know.

“It has nothing to do with the Sultan of Selangor’s directive.

“You must understand, I was elected as a board member, not appointed, so I have the right.

“As for Datuk Hamidin’s reaction, we have been friends for a long time, and of course, he was disappointed when I informed him of my decision, but he accepted it. I am leaving FAM on good terms,” added Shahril.

Earlier, the Sultan of Selangor expressed anger towards the MFL for what he deemed were unjust penalties imposed on Selangor FC.

Furthermore, he expressed disappointment with Hamidin for not taking a serious enough stance on the acid attack on Selangor striker Faisal Halim, which occurred on May 5.

Therefore, as patron of Selangor FC, his majesty said that he will not hesitate to withdraw from the Malaysia Super League for a period of time. – June 26, 2024
