Selangor govt mobilises fundraiser for RM100,000 MFL fine amid Sultan’s fury

MB says this is a joint effort between state govt, sports exco which emphasises inclusion of fans, pledges to personally contribute to Charity Shield no-show penalty

10:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Selangor government, alongside the state Sports Executive Council, is launching a joint initiative to raise funds for the RM100,000 fine imposed by the Malaysian Football League (MFL).

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced this move today, emphasising the inclusion of the Red Giants’ fans in the effort.

“More details on this initiative will be forthcoming from the Selangor chapter of the National Sports Council and the state Sports Exco.

“To galvanise this collective effort, both I and the state councillor will personally contribute to the fundraising next week, underscoring our commitment to uphold justice for Selangor FC,” the statement read.

The initiative follows Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah’s condemnation of MFL’s harsh penalties on Selangor FC.

His majesty expressed dismay toward Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin for perceived inaction regarding the acid attack on Selangor striker Faisal Halim.

“The sultan’s statement mirrors the frustration and disappointment of football fans over MFL’s decisions, which appear devoid of compassion and exceed reasonable limits,” the statement continued.

“The violent incident involving Faisal Halim is a stain on the nation’s football history.

“As custodians of the league, MFL should champion justice, combat violence, and prioritise the safety of our national players who face unjust treatment from cowardly perpetrators.”

The sultan’s decree came in response to MFL’s imposition of not only the RM100,000 fine but also a ban on spectators at the upcoming Super League match between Selangor FC and Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) and a three-point deduction, compounded by JDT’s uncontested win in the Charity Shield match.

Amirudin emphasised that such unprecedented actions have stirred anger and disappointment among supporters, signalling to MFL that their decisions lacked accountability and foresight. – June 26, 2024
