Asean Uni Games: judo champ Amir Daniel to share RM3,000 reward with mother

Incentive from Higher Education Ministry to also go towards treating coaches, says athlete

SURABAYA – While most athletes may be tempted to keep cash rewards for personal use, national judo exponent Amir Daniel Abdul Majeed has decided to share his RM3,000 gold medal incentive with his mother.

Amir Daniel, who won gold at the Asean University Games here yesterday, said this was his way of thanking his mother, Yeoh Suat Khim, for her strong support.  

The 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist struck gold in the below 81kg category at the Airlangga Convention Centre in the presence of his mother.

The 20-year-old beat Indonesia’s Yuta Gladius Taslim in the final via an ippon decision, earning himself the RM3,000 incentive from the Higher Education Ministry.

“When I get the money, I want to give part of it to my mother as pocket money because she has helped me a lot. Besides that, I also want to treat my coaches to make them happy.

“The balance I will use for my studies because academic materials are not cheap nowadays. The RM3,000 incentive will surely come in handy,” said the Universiti Sains Malaysia student.

Meanwhile, Suat Khim admitted that she was always worried whenever she saw Amir Daniel step into the ring.

“My heart feels like it is going to burst, but I don’t feel sad or anything, just excited because mistakes can be made in every move. When he competes, I just want to see him perform his best,” she said. – June 28, 2024
