Zhijie’s tragic death underscores crucial BAM-IJN partnership for athlete health

Incident a 'wake-up call' for importance of comprehensive health checks among athletes, medical assessments should be mandatory across all national sports associations, says BAM president

10:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The sudden death of Chinese badminton player Zhang Zhijie at the 2024 Asian Junior Badminton Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, yesterday shocked the badminton community.

The 17-year-old collapsed on the court during a group-stage match against Japan and was pronounced dead after being rushed to a local hospital.

In light of this tragedy, the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is highlighting the steps it has taken to prevent similar incidents.

In May, BAM signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Heart Institute (IJN), a move that BAM president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria now considers crucial.

Speaking to Scoop, Norza described the incident as a “wake-up call” for the entire badminton fraternity.

He urged other national sports associations to mandate thorough medical check-ups for their athletes.

“It’s a wake-up call. Just because they are junior players, we can’t assume they have no health issues.

“Our collaboration with IJN is timely. The well-being of our athletes is of paramount importance.

“When they compete for the country, they must be in good condition. We should make thorough medical check-ups compulsory,” Norza said.

Zhijie was taken to the hospital within two minutes of collapsing but passed away at 11.20pm local time.

The cause of death is still undetermined, according to the Chinese Badminton Association (CBA).

Following the incident, Norza expressed his condolences: “It is very sad to see such a young and talented player go so soon. Our condolences to his family, friends, and teammates as well as the entire Chinese Badminton Association (CBA).”

Early detection saves lives

Thanks to the partnership between BAM and IJN, two national junior players were diagnosed with serious heart conditions following comprehensive medical check-ups.

BAM administrative director Michelle Chai shared that, while annual check-ups are essential, increasing their frequency may not be necessary.

“We don’t want to overdo it. Medical check-ups more than once a year are too much.

“Previously, junior players joining ABM underwent basic medical check-ups. Now, with IJN, we include heart screenings for potential players.

“This screening detected two serious cases, allowing us to take remedial action and potentially save lives. The next screening will be early next year,” Michelle told Scoop.

The collaboration with IJN has proven vital, detecting illnesses that could have resulted in severe outcomes for the athletes.

“Collaboration with IJN is not only timely but also necessary. We’re glad to offer this service to our players,” Michelle added.

According to the IJN Foundation, regular health screenings are crucial, especially for heart diseases, starting as early as the 20s.

Annual check-ups are recommended after the age of 40 to monitor health conditions effectively. – July 1, 2024
