KUALA LUMPUR – The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) is deeply saddened by the passing of Yap Tee Loy yesterday. He was 83.

Affectionately known as “Uncle Yap”, Tee Loy played a pivotal role in Malaysian badminton, serving as the honorary secretary of the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association from 1986 to 1997 under the late Datuk Punch Gunalan.

Throughout his distinguished career as a senior badminton technical official, Tee Loy officiated as an umpire and referee in prestigious international tournaments spanning over four decades.

His expertise graced events such as the Olympics, Asian Games, SEA Games and various competitions sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation, Badminton Asia and BAM.

In 2000, Tee Loy joined BAM as the tournament manager and assumed responsibility as the officer in charge of BAM technical officials, a role he dutifully fulfilled until 2009.

“The Badminton Association of Malaysia extends its deepest condolences to Yap’s family, friends and colleagues. His contributions to badminton will never be forgotten.

“Rest in peace, Uncle Yap,” BAM said in a statement today. – July 6, 2024
