KUALA LUMPUR – The Speedy Tigers endured a crushing 10-1 defeat to Germany in a test match of the European Tour series in Monchengladbach last night.
The outcome was unexpectedly severe, leaving head coach Sarjit Singh in shock as his team conceded a barrage of goals.
Sarjit attributed the heavy loss to the team’s inability to maintain a solid defence.
“To be honest, I did not expect this number of goals. The team’s defensive structure completely collapsed, giving space to the opponents to run wild in the Malaysian half,” he explained in a statement shared by the Malaysian Hockey Confederation with the media.
Sarjit also noted the team’s lack of clinical finishing in Germany’s D area, labelling the result as “rather disappointing”.
Despite the defeat, Sarjit praised his team for their attacking approach against a much higher-ranked opponent.
“From a positive point of view, the players are capable of taking on the German team, but they are not very consistent and many things need to be improved. They also dare to play attacking hockey,” he said.
Sarjit remains hopeful that his players will learn from this experience and improve.
“The coaching staff hopes that the players can rise and improve the weaknesses shown in the match against Germany. It is a big responsibility for the coaching staff to improve the team,” he added.
In the match, the national team secured a consolation goal through Mohd Fitri Saari, who scored from a penalty corner in the 47th minute.
This defeat marks Malaysia’s second loss in four matches, following their recent defeat to Belgium B in Antwerp on Wednesday.
The Speedy Tigers will rest for a day before resuming action at the Gladbach Hockey and Tennis Club against Monchengladbach Club on Wednesday. – July 8, 2024
