PARIS – Chinese shuttler Huang Yaqiong had a double-celebration after the Paris Olympics mixed doubles final at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena, here today.

Yaqiong, 30, and her partner Zheng Siwei firstly improved on their silver medal at Tokyo 2020 by beating South Koreans Kim Won-ho and Jeong Na-eun 21-8, 21-11 to win gold.

Shortly after the medal presentation, she had a pleasant surprise when her boyfriend and China’s men’s doubles player Liu Yuchen, 29, proposed to her with a diamond ring.

“I cannot describe the feeling because I am too happy, happy and happy. Getting the gold medal is recognition of our journey,” she said about the gold medal feat.

“I was surprised by the engagement ring. I haven’t thought about how we will celebrate (for the proposal and victory).”

Yuchen, last edition’s silver medallist with Li Junhui, was knocked out with his current partner Ou Xuanyi in the group stage. – August 3, 2024
