Bunga Raya’s final practice match scrapped as Singapore pulls out

Withdrawal was due to multiple injuries among Singaporean players

10:21 PM MYT

PETALING JAYA – The national 7’s rugby team’s preparation unexpectedly hit a snag when Singapore withdrew from their final practice match set for today at Padang Astaka, here.

Head coach Nik Ismade Nik Man revealed that he was informed of the decision late last night by Singapore’s coach, Suhaimi Amran, who cited multiple injuries among his players as the reason for the withdrawal.

As a result, Nik Ismade’s squad will only be able to test their strength against two teams: Sukma Kelantan and Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI).

Singapore has been in Kuala Lumpur since August 4, engaging in joint training sessions with Malaysia ahead of the Asian Seven Series, which begins in September.

The teams were originally scheduled for two practice matches, but only one match was completed on Friday, with Malaysia emerging victorious.

“It’s definitely different facing a national team compared to a club team, both in intensity and playing style.

“I believe Kelantan and SSTMI gained more from this match than we did.

“Given the late notice, I treated this match mainly as an opportunity to evaluate player compatibility,” said Nik Ismade.

Nik Ismade expressed disappointment that no additional friendly matches can be scheduled due to a tight calendar, especially since most local teams are preparing for the Agong Cup, which kicks off on September 7.

“I find it difficult to arrange any additional matches, as the Agong Cup is approaching, and most teams are not interested in organising 7s games with us.

“However, I still have the opportunity to assess players, as some will be involved in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) Sarawak. After that event concludes, I will announce the 12 best players who will represent the national team,” he added.

The Asia Rugby Seven Series will commence in South Korea on September 7-8, followed by tournaments in China on September 21 to 22, and Thailand on November 10 to 11.

This year’s series features nine teams, including Malaysia and Singapore, along with eight-time champions Japan, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, South Korea, and the UAE.

Last year, Malaysia made history by securing a third-place finish in the final series held in Bangkok, defeating the UAE in the bronze medal match. – August 10, 2024
