KUALA LUMPUR – Not just one, but four states will serve as co-hosts for the 2027 SEA Games.

Following Sarawak’s public declaration of interest to host the biennial event, Sabah and Penang have joined Kuala Lumpur in the bid to co-host the 2027 SEA Games.

In a statement issued by the Youth and Sports Ministry, the Malaysian government has accepted the bid from the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) to host the 2027 SEA Games.

“The decision was approved by the cabinet in a meeting chaired by the prime minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, after considering the commitment of the three other states to co-host.

“Previously, Sarawak, Sabah, and Penang had expressed their willingness to use their respective allocations to co-host the event with Kuala Lumpur.

“The cabinet also congratulated the Sarawak government and the Malaysia Games (Sukma) XXI Organising Committee for successfully hosting the event, which concluded on August 24,” stated the ministry in a press release issued today.

For the record, Sarawak recently demonstrated its capability to host major sports events by successfully organising the Sarawak Sukma, which concluded last week.

This is not the first time the SEA Games in Malaysia has been hosted across multiple states. In the 2017 edition, while Kuala Lumpur was the main venue, five other states – Selangor, Putrajaya, Negri Sembilan, Kedah and Terengganu – assisted in hosting various events.

Similarly, during Malaysia’s hosting of the Games in 2001, five states, such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Negri Sembilan, Johor and Selangor, collaborated to successfully stage the event. – August 28, 2024
