BAM unlikely to announce head coaches this week

Talks with top international coaches continue, with Rexy Mainaky hinting at a near-final deal for the singles department, while Rosman Razak emerges as a frontrunner for the women’s doubles role

3:40 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has yet to decide on the appointments for the head coaching roles at the Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM).

While names such as Indonesia’s Mulyo Handoyo, Denmark’s Kenneth Jonassen, and South Korea’s Kim Ji-hyun have been thrown into the mix for the singles head coach position, the national body is also in talks with several other candidates.

Speaking to Scoop, BAM acting president Datuk V. Subramaniam said that no decisions have been finalised as discussions with several candidates are still ongoing, and the announcement will be made once a decision is reached.

On Tuesday, ABM coaching director Rexy Mainaky mentioned that both he and BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh had verbally agreed to terms with a foreign coach during a Zoom meeting.

This coach is expected to lead both the men’s and women’s singles departments.

According to Rexy, the deal was 95% complete, and an announcement could be made on Friday if everything is confirmed.

However, as everything has yet to be set in stone so far, it is unlikely that any announcement will be made this week on this matter.

Regarding the women’s doubles head coach position, former international Rosman Razak has been strongly linked with the role.

Rosman, who currently trains independent doubles players such as Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi, as well as Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, declined to comment when contacted.

Last week, Rexy announced a newly revamped coaching structure, with each department set to be led by a head coach.

BAM also chose not to renew the contract of long-serving men’s singles head coach Hendrawan and released national junior singles coach Ameer Amri Zainuddin. — October 9, 2024
