KUALA LUMPUR – Brazilian athlete Fernando Toldi and Australia’s Regan Hollioake delivered spectacular performances at the Ironman Malaysia 2024, conquering the intense course in Langkawi yesterday. 

The challenging event, known for its gruelling 3.8km swim, 180km bike, and 42.2km run, saw athletes from around the world push their limits.

Toldi, 37, claimed victory in the men’s professional race with an impressive time of 8 hours, 10 minutes, and 23 seconds, outpacing his competitors in his first appearance in Malaysia. 

Tim Van Berkel from Australia followed closely in second place with 8:12:38, while Germany’s Andreas Dreitz finished third at 8:18:07.

The race took athletes through some of Langkawi’s most scenic spots, including the rolling hills of Datai, the colourful kampungs, and the iconic coastline of Pantai Kok.

Toldi’s strategic pacing and endurance saw him excel in all three segments, especially the bike leg, where he skillfully navigated the winding terrain.

“This was a tough day, very mental. I had to push myself like never before, but I’m so happy. This is the most important race of my life and my biggest result,” Toldi reflected on his victory.

The win comes just months after his triumph at the Ironman 70.3 Ecuador, marking a stellar year for the athlete.

In the women’s professional race, Australia’s Regan Hollioake impressed with a dominant performance, completing the course in 9:13:07. 

This victory follows her earlier win at Ironman Australia, solidifying her rise in the triathlon world. 

She finished a significant 17 minutes ahead of her compatriot Katie Remond, who took second place with a time of 9:30:00.

Italy’s Federica De Nicola secured third, crossing the finish line at 9:42:05.

Hollioake described the Langkawi course as the toughest she has ever faced, particularly battling Malaysia’s sweltering heat. 

“I wasn’t sure how I’d handle the heat, but it was as brutal as expected. I’m relieved for it to be over but thrilled with the win,” said the 35-year-old.

The event attracted 1,800 athletes from 51 countries, further establishing Langkawi as a premier destination for endurance sports. 

Regional Director of Ironman Asia, CG Lim, highlighted the economic and tourism boost, emphasising the potential for Ironman Malaysia to grow in global prominence. — October 13, 2024
