KUALA LUMPUR — The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has stepped in to assist professional women’s doubles player Ng Qi Xuan, who is currently hospitalised due to a knee injury.

BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh explained that despite Qi Xuan no longer being under BAM’s purview, the organisation still feels a responsibility to provide the necessary assistance.

Qi Xuan, paired with Yap Rui Chen, was on the brink of victory against Teoh Mei Xing and Go Pei Kee in the Malaysia Super 100 semi-final at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara.

However, after a mistimed landing following a jumping smash, the 24-year-old dislocated her knee and had to be rushed to the hospital for further treatment.

Kenny added that they have been in contact with the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS), and Minister Hannah Yeoh has also expressed KBS’s willingness to offer assistance to ensure Qi Xuan’s speedy recovery.

“We’ve had internal discussions on ways we can assist her. Though she’s now a professional player, she still represents Malaysia and was a former BAM athlete, so we’re more than willing to help.

“If she opts for rehabilitation, she could even do it at ABM (Akademi Badminton Malaysia). I’ve also spoken with Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, who has offered her full support,” said Kenny.

It is understood that Qi Xuan’s condition has stabilised, and BAM plans to visit her soon.

In this tournament, aside from competing in the women’s doubles, Qi Xuan also teamed up with Owen Ting in the mixed doubles, but their run came to an end in the second round. — October 21, 2024
