KUALA LUMPUR — Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) vice president Muhd Iqbal Sulaiman has criticised the council’s president, Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin, for attempting to appoint Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz as the council’s patron without consulting the board.
It has been reported that the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister was approached to replace the long-standing patron, Tun Jeanne Abdullah, the wife of former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Speaking to Scoop, Iqbal expressed the shock of PCM board and executive committee members, who represent 25 associations, upon discovering that a formal letter had allegedly been sent to the minister in April this year.
“We had no idea why this decision was made without consulting any of us. We were shocked to see Tengku Zafrul’s name in the document, and we, the executive committee members, were left wondering when we had agreed to this.
“I don’t understand the need for us to get a new patron when everything has been running smoothly within the council. As president, Megat should have consulted us before signing such a document.
“Where is the respect for us? We’re not mere puppets and should not be expected to simply follow orders. Of course, bringing Tengku Zafrul on as a patron could benefit the council in many ways, but this is not a dictatorship; every decision has to be made collectively.
“I hope that in the upcoming presidential elections, we elect a president who is forward-thinking and not someone focused solely on self-interest,” said Iqbal, who also serves as Wheelchair Tennis Malaysia president.
When Scoop contacted Megat for a response, he confirmed that the MITI minister had been approached but clarified that it was not for the role of council patron.
“Yes, I did approach Tengku Zafrul, but it wasn’t as a patron of the council; it was for a grassroots para programme called Sukom. We needed a patron for the programme, which is why we approached him, nothing more.
“This is an old issue, and I wonder why it’s suddenly being brought up without reason. In fact, the discussion to bring Tengku Zafrul on board didn’t even materialise.
“I have nothing further to say about those spreading these rumours. Let them continue as they wish,” said Megat when contacted.
For the record, Tengku Zafrul had shown an interest in sports, even while serving as the chief executive of CIMB Bank.
The businessman-turned-politician has been part of the organising committees for various events, including Junior Cycling Malaysia, the Malaysian Dota 2 Championships, the Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Series, and the CIMB National Golf Championships.
He has also contributed to the National Junior Squash Circuit and the development of the Johan Cruyff football courts at Kuala Lumpur–the Cruyff Foundation. — October 29, 2024
