The club aims to improve Super League performance following Akmal Rizal’s exit

GEORGE TOWN – Penang FC is looking to replace head coach Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli, ending weeks of speculation about his position with the Panthers.

The decision was made during an October 21 board meeting to address the club’s management direction following an unsatisfactory Super League season, according to a statement from the Penang FC board of directors.

“A decision was made to replace the head coach with someone who has more league experience to boost Penang FC’s performance and competitiveness,” the statement said.

The board expressed gratitude for Akmal Rizal’s commitment, noting that he will remain with the club in a new role, as he is still under contract. 

Discussions with potential head coach candidates began on October 21, with an announcement expected soon.

The Malaysian Football League (MFL) has been informed, and interim approval has been granted for the temporary coaching arrangement.

Following this decision, Penang FC will be temporarily managed by assistant head coach Mat Saiful Mohamad, with support from technical director Merzagua Abderrazak.

Players have been urged to support the interim leaders, and the club thanked fans for their continued support.

Akmal Rizal’s position had been under scrutiny following Penang FC’s recent poor performance, with rumours intensifying after he missed the October 25 match against Sabah FC, where the team suffered a heavy 4-0 loss.

This defeat marked Penang FC’s third consecutive loss, placing them in 11th position with 11 points from 13 matches. — November 1, 2024
