Will Malaysia host the final MotoGP showdown?

As Dorna seeks a new venue following the cancellation of the Valencia GP due to severe flooding, Sepang International Circuit expresses readiness to step in as host for the MotoGP finale

SEPANG — The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) has not yet decided whether to take over the hosting of the World Motorcycle Championship (MotoGP) final race, originally scheduled for the Valencia Grand Prix in Spain.

SIC CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif said that discussions with race organiser Dorna about moving the race to Malaysia have not occurred, but an announcement will come soon.

He added that Malaysia is prepared to host the race if Dorna requests a replacement for Valencia. 

“If they give (us to host), we are ready. If so, can we hold it here, maybe in December? But for now, there is no discussion about having it here. 

“Perhaps they are looking for another circuit, maybe in Europe,” he told reporters at SIC is here today.

Azhan explained that each circuit requires specific tyres, and returning to Malaysia would necessitate a month to produce and shape new tyres. 

Yesterday, Dorna announced the cancellation of the Valencia GP, scheduled for November 15-17, due to heavy flooding in the Spanish province, which has resulted in significant destruction and over 200 fatalities. 

The new location for the final race will be announced soon. — November 2, 2024
