Sepang invites local riders, including ‘kapcai’ enthusiasts, to train on world-class circuit

SIC offers affordable access to its track for Malaysian riders, aiming to boost homegrown talent through reduced training costs

3:21 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is encouraging more local riders to take advantage of its track access for training, reinforcing its commitment to supporting Malaysian motorcycle racing talent.

Under this initiative, SIC offers its world-class circuit to local riders at minimal cost, with fees limited to security and marshal services.

SIC CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif emphasised the circuit’s continued openness to accommodating Malaysian riders who wish to hone their skills on an international-grade track.

“I promise all Malaysian riders, whoever wants to train here can just contact us and, if there is an empty slot, they can use the SIC to train,” Azhan said yesterday as Bernama reported, inviting riders to make the most of this platform to further develop their competitive edge.

This access is structured to ensure safety by organising training sessions based on motorcycle categories, such as underbone (kapcai), 250cc, and 600cc classes, to avoid potential hazards from mixed-speed training.

“However, we need to set a stipulation based on categories, whereby those riding the ‘kapcai’ (underbone motorcycle) will not be allowed to train together with those riding 250cc and 600cc machines for safety purposes.

“So, we invite everyone to train here as the rental for the circuit is free,” Azhan added.

The announcement aligns with SIC’s recent success in hosting the 2024 Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix, which drew nearly 185,000 spectators over the past three days.

Azhan credited the encouraging turnout to affordable Rahmah tickets, priced at RM49.90, and expressed gratitude to the Youth and Sports Ministry for their ongoing support. — November 4, 2024
