KUALA LUMPUR – Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has expressed hope that the upcoming Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) presidential election will be conducted fairly and responsibly, given their importance to the development of para-athletes.
Her comments come as former National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail steps out of retirement to challenge PCM’s incumbent president, Datuk Seri Megat D. Shahriman Zaharudin.
“I’m not involved in the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) or the Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM). However, I can comment on Shapawi and his extensive experience.
“Since his retirement, he has received numerous offers to return to sports management, but he is very selective in his decisions. If he has chosen to contest for PCM’s presidency, I wish him all the best.
“Ultimately, it is up to the PCM members to decide. My hope is that the elections take place in a fair and healthy manner because the development of our para-athletes depends on it,” Hannah said at the launch of the KBS MyLadies Esports initiative this morning.
Shapawi, who served the NSC for over three decades, recently announced his intention to run for PCM presidency, citing concerns about internal issues within the organisation.
In an interview with Scoop yesterday, he voiced frustration with PCM’s current leadership, claiming it prioritises assigning blame over fostering collaboration.
While he did not elaborate, his remarks are believed to reference accusations from Megat blaming the NSC for the Malaysian para contingent’s failure to meet their target of four gold medals at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
At the same time, Hannah confirmed that Sarawak, Penang, and Johor have joined the Federal Territories in committing to co-host the 2027 SEA Games.
“Sarawak will contribute 50% of the hosting and organising costs, while Penang has pledged RM15 million, and Johor RM5 million,” she said.
“Johor will only host the football tournament. NSC received confirmation from Johor, and this will be an opportunity to showcase the state’s unmatched football infrastructure.
“The working committee representing all three states and the Federal Territories will meet in January to finalise the number of sports for the SEA Games. We aim to maintain consistency in the selection of sports to provide a strong platform for our athletes.”
Meanwhile, on the MyLadies Esports initiative, Hannah shared her satisfaction with the grassroots programme, which saw participation from 1,500 individuals across 200 teams.
She reiterated the NSC’s commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for athletes, particularly young girls, to engage in esports and other sports.
“We remain dedicated to nurturing talent and ensuring athletes, especially girls, have a healthy environment in which to thrive,” Hannah said. – December 7, 2024
