KUALA LUMPUR – National men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik have submitted their preferred coaching suggestions to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) following the departure of Tan Bin Shen.
Bin Shen, whose contract ends on January 13, has opted not to renew and is expected to join the Hong Kong Badminton Association.
The duo revealed they were informed of Bin Shen’s decision after the recent World Tour Finals in Hangzhou, China, where the world number six pair failed to progress beyond the group stage.
“I don’t want to say too much because coaches come and go. We respect and accept his decision. I think he has his own goals to achieve. We’ll wait for the new coach to be appointed and move forward,” said Aaron.
“It’s not our place to comment further. We’ll let BAM announce it when the time comes, as the new coach will also be working with other pairs,” he added during a partnership extension ceremony between BAM and isotonic drink brand 100Plus at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara today.
Aaron confirmed that they have shared their preferences for a new coach with BAM but will respect the association’s final decision.
“I hope the new coach can further develop the men’s doubles department and nurture the younger pairs in the team,” he said.
When asked about their openness to foreign coaches, the pair emphasised they have no objections.
“To be honest, we have no issues working with anyone. We are always open to learning and improving ourselves with any coach, local or foreign,” said Wooi Yik.
It is understood that potential candidates include Mathias Boe, Herry Iman Pierngadi, and Flandy Limpele, all of whom are available after departing their roles with the Indian, Indonesian, and Hong Kong badminton associations, respectively.
Wooi Yik also reflected on Bin Shen’s contributions during his five years as their coach.
“He has helped us become one of the best pairs in the world. We’ve learned so much from him and will try to give him a perfect farewell by winning the Malaysia Open title next year.”
Under Bin Shen’s guidance, Aaron and Wooi Yik achieved notable milestones, including Olympic bronze medals at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, and the 2022 World Championship title. — December 23, 2024
