NSAs want Sports Commissioner to nullify PCM AGM: lawyer

‘Procedural integrity’ of the Paralympic Council of Malaysia’s AGM and presidential election on Dec 15 questioned

2:54 PM MYT

PUTRAJAYA — Two national sports associations are seeking the intervention of the Sports Commissioner’s Office to nullify the Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) annual general meeting (AGM) 2025-2029 held last month.

This was confirmed by lawyer Datuk Michael Wong, who is also the former president of the Malaysian Canoe Association (MASCA).

He said he had been “mandated” by the associations to file a report requesting the nullification of the PCM AGM held on Dec 15.

“The issues raised concern the sincerity and procedural integrity of both the AGM and the presidential election. This report will be submitted to the Sports Commissioner’s Office soon,” Michael told the press after accompanying former National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail to lodge a police report at the Precinct 7 police station, here, today.

Michael did not specify which national sports associations had instructed him to appeal to the Sports Commissioner.

Michael said there were allegations of irregularities in the nomination process for PCM’s election and claimed that certain procedures during the AGM were not in compliance with PCM’s constitution.

“I am currently awaiting all the necessary documents before filing the report,” he added.

At the AGM, incumbent president Megat was re-elected, defeating Shapawi by 14 votes to 10.

Shapawi had lodged a report against PCM president Datuk Seri Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin under Section 500 of the Penal Code for criminal defamation.

In his police report, Shapawi said the PCM president had made false allegations about him in the lead-up to the AGM. Shapawi is also preparing to file a defamation suit against Megat in the High Court next week.

On Dec 14, a day before the AGM, Megat issued a press statement after lodging a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). He alleged that Shapawi and Mohd Sofian Hamzah, the NSC para division director, had bribed the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to secure nominations for the election. – January 2, 2024.
