Sukma 2026: Selangor considers SIC, Merdeka Stadium if KSSA not completed

Sports exco Mohd Najwan Halimi says state ‘not constrained by conventional methods’

3:03 PM MYT

KUALA SELANGOR – The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) and Merdeka Stadium are among the primary venues being considered for the opening ceremony of the 2026 Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Selangor should the construction of the Shah Alam Sports Complex (KSSA) face delays and not be completed on time.

Selangor Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said the state government is exploring creative alternatives and taking inspiration from the innovative approach of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony.

“We’re not constrained by conventional methods. Selangor’s sports infrastructure is already extensive and well-equipped. For instance, the recent Olympics in France utilised a river setting, with athletes paraded on boats.

“Selangor offers many alternative venues, and we will announce the selected location along with the concept and execution plans later. Our goal is to align the organisation of Sukma 2026 with Selangor’s unique context and identity,” he said.

He was met by reporters at the Selangor Madani Youth Tour Carnival 2024 Series 3 at Pantai Remis, Jeram, today.

In November, Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) said the development of the KSSA, which will be done in three phases, should be completed by 2029.

The first phase, which is expected to be done by December 2026, involves demolishing the existing stadium and building the KSSA. The second phase, projected to begin in January 2027, will see the construction of a closed theatre, youth and sports wing as well as recreational areas.

The final phase potentially commencing between January 2028 and December 2029 will involve building an integrated terminal and hotel. – January 4, 2025
