Malaysia to host 5 major Asian taekwondo championships in 2025

Malaysia’s taekwondo community leaps forward as Taekwondo Malaysia set the stage for athletic excellence, greater collaboration

5:55 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — Taekwondo Malaysia (TM) has secured bids to host five major Asian taekwondo championships in Kuching, Sarawak, this year, thanks to strong support from the Sarawak government.

The championships include the Asian Junior Kyorugi Taekwondo Championship, Asian Junior Poomsae Taekwondo Championship, Asian Cadet Kyorugi Taekwondo Championship, Asian Cadet Poomsae Taekwondo Championship, and the Para Taekwondo Championship.

“These championships will position Malaysia as a leader in hosting world-class taekwondo events while advancing our athletes’ skills and preparing them for future international competitions,” TM stated today.

TM also extended an open invitation to unaffiliated taekwondo organisations to join its mission, emphasising the importance of aligning with the legitimate governing body to ensure official recognition and avoid potential legal complications.

As the sole governing body for the World Taekwondo (WT) system in Malaysia, TM reaffirmed its authority to represent the country in WT-sanctioned competitions globally.

In a significant move, TM hosted a comprehensive reassessment and introduction session today for athletes and officials from the Malaysian Taekwondo Association (MTA) and Kukkiwon Malaysia.

“This initiative underscores our commitment to inclusivity and collaboration as we officially welcome them into the TM family. We encourage all Taekwondo organisations to unite under a shared vision of qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games and achieving an Olympic medal by 2032,” TM’s statement added. — January 4, 2025
