KUALA LUMPUR – The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) is seeking government approval to secure citizenship for four new heritage players in a bid to bolster Harimau Malaya’s squad for the upcoming 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers.

In a statement today, FAM confirmed it is finalising documentation for an additional four players as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the national team.

“FAM extends its gratitude to the Malaysian government for its support in efforts to enhance the quality of the Harimau Malaya team,” the statement read.

Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim recently revealed that six to seven heritage players have been identified to don Malaysia’s colours.

Tunku Ismail also expressed hope that the government would expedite the process of granting Malaysian passports, enabling the players to represent Harimau Malaya in the qualifiers starting this March.

Under the guidance of new head coach Peter Cklamovski, Malaysia will begin their Group F campaign against Nepal on 25 March. The group also includes Vietnam and Laos, with only the group winners securing a spot in the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia. — January 25, 2025
