Azizulhasni to announce future plans during Ramadan

Pocket Rocketman mulls his next steps after a meeting with Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and technical director John Beasley, focusing on honouring his legacy appropriately

KUALA LUMPUR – After years of making Malaysia proud on the world stage, Datuk Azizulhasni Awang is expected to announce his future plans during Ramadan next month.  

The national cycling icon met with Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh and Malaysian cycling technical director John Beasley yesterday, where discussions were held regarding his next steps following his 2024 Paris Olympics outing.  

While no official statement has been made, speculation is growing that Azizulhasni will take this opportunity to bring clarity to his career direction, as well as his position within the National Podium and the Road to Gold (RTG) programmes.  

“The meeting with Hannah was very good. She has always been a great supporter of Azizul and the rest of the national cycling team,” Beasley said.  

“I believe Azizul knows what he wants and just needs a little more time before making any announcement. He will be heading back to Australia next week and then returning to Malaysia again next month during Ramadan.”  

Having won Malaysia’s first-ever Olympic medals in track cycling – a bronze in Rio 2016 and a silver in Tokyo 2020 – Azizulhasni’s legacy is already cemented. Beyond his achievements on the bike, his dedication, discipline, and perseverance have made him a role model for aspiring athletes nationwide.  

Given his stature as a legend of Malaysian sport, it is only fitting that Azizulhasni, who was also crowned Keirin world champion in 2017, makes his announcement in a proper and dignified manner.  

Ramadan, a month of reflection and significance, would serve as a meaningful moment for the Pocket Rocketman to share his decision with the nation.  

Whether he chooses to continue racing, transition into coaching, or take on a new role within Malaysian cycling, one thing remains certain – Azizulhasni Awang’s name will always be synonymous with excellence, determination, and national pride.  

For now, Malaysia awaits his decision with deep respect and gratitude for all that he has given to the sport. – February 18, 2025
