Ex-national basketball player denies sexual harassment allegations

He refutes claims, says past case was resolved and no arrest warrant has been issued

9:00 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — A former national basketball player accused of sexually harassing students at an international school has denied the allegations, stating that no arrest warrant has been issued against him.

Speaking to Scoop on condition of anonymity, the 36-year-old, who now works as a basketball coach, urged netizens and parents at the school to stop spreading false rumours and pressuring authorities over a past case that, he claimed, had already been resolved.

He acknowledged that he was charged under Section 377E of the Penal Code in 2019 for inciting a child to commit an act of gross indecency—an offence punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment and whipping.

However, the Putrajaya Sessions Court later granted him a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) after the complainant withdrew their police report.

“This is truly absurd and disturbing. I don’t understand why certain netizens and parents continue to pressure the authorities by lodging false police reports against me, linking me to a previous case that has already been cleared.

“I have no idea what people hope to gain by doing this. I am just an ordinary person trying to live my life, teaching basketball to young players and sharing my knowledge in the schools where I work.

“I have never committed such actions at my current school, nor have I engaged in such despicable behaviour at any point in my life. My employer conducted thorough background checks before hiring me, so why are people still trying to tarnish my reputation after so many years?

“The police have been very understanding of my situation and have cleared my name, stating that there is no evidence to support these allegations. I will be filing a police report and taking legal action against those spreading false information about me, as I have already gathered screenshots of the defamatory posts.

“I just want to live my life and do my job in peace. I urge people to stop spreading false information about me,” he said.

When Scoop contacted the investigating officer handling the case, police confirmed that the former athlete had been cleared of all charges, stating that no evidence had been found. As a result, no further arrests or investigations would be carried out.

The allegations against the former national basketball player were brought to Scoop’s attention by a source within the sports community.

The athlete made 27 appearances for the national basketball team and competed in major tournaments, including the FIBA Asia Cup and the SEA Games. — March 1, 2025
