Azeem set to compete at 2025 SEA Games, pending study commitments

KUALA LUMPUR – National sprinter Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi is expected to compete at the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand this December.

Malaysia Athletics (MA) technical director Robert Ballard said that in addition to the biennial event, Azeem—who is currently based in the United States—will also take part in several major competitions, including the World University Games in Germany in July and the World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, in September.  

“We hope Azeem will compete in the SEA Games, but a lot will depend on how it aligns with his studies in the US.  

“I had a good conversation with his coach earlier this week. We’re obviously excited about his new national record and what that could mean for the rest of the season,” he said recently.  

Azeem made a strong start to the season by setting a new national 60-metre indoor record with a time of 6.56 seconds, securing a bronze medal at the 2025 SEC Indoor Track and Field Championships last Sunday.  

This achievement has also qualified him for the NCAA Championships in the US, scheduled for March 14-15.  

For the record, Azeem made his SEA Games debut in Vietnam in 2021 but opted out of the 2023 edition in Cambodia to focus on training and competing in the US. — March 7, 2025
