KUALA LUMPUR – Kedah Darul Aman FC, which has competed in Malaysia’s top-tier football competitions for 101 years since its establishment, is on the verge of rebranding to secure its future in the Super League.
According to sources within the football fraternity, the Canaries – who have been grappling with financial difficulties in the ongoing M-League season – are expected to be taken over by a new corporate entity for the next campaign.
This follows comments by Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim on Wednesday, in which he claimed Kedah and Sri Pahang would not feature in next season’s Super League due to unresolved issues.
“The club will definitely compete in the upcoming season but possibly under a new name and a rebooted system. The new corporate owners, who are ready to come on board, are expected to make several changes, making the club 100% self-managed and no longer dependent on the state government or the state football association.
“Several familiar faces from the club’s management are also expected to be laid off, and several football experts from abroad are likely to take on senior roles at the club in the coming months.
“The potential new owners are also looking to invest in upgrading some of the club’s facilities and improving its home stadium. Priority will also be given to ensuring that no footballers face salary arrears and that their salaries are paid in full throughout the next season.
“The club seems to have a new vision and direction now, and under new ownership, they aim to push their limits by qualifying for the Asian Champions League 2. Even if the takeover doesn’t materialise, a major reboot will definitely take place next season,” said the source.
Meanwhile, Kedah has dismissed Tunku Ismail’s claim that they will withdraw from next season’s M-League, assuring fans that the club is working to meet the licensing requirements.
Club owner Tan Sri Dr Daud Bakar issued a statement yesterday, clarifying that no decision to withdraw had been made.
“My management team and I are in constant communication with the Malaysian Football League (MFL) to comply with all club licensing requirements within the timeframe set by the MFL licensing body.
“We have not submitted any request to leave the M-League, nor do we intend to dissolve the team. We will continue to fight to remain in the Super League next season.
“The real failure is in not trying at all. I hope this statement provides clarity and reassurance to everyone. We will continue our efforts,” the statement read.
Scoop will reach out to the MFL for an update on Kedah’s progress with club licensing. – March 15, 2025
