Tengku Zafrul accepts BAM presidency nomination

Miti minister confirms he will contest top post to succeed Tan Sri Norza Zakaria

2:04 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz has accepted the nomination for the presidency of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

The 51-year-old investment, trade and industry minister confirmed to Scoop that he is looking forward to leading BAM if elected as its president in May, succeeding Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria.

The presidency of BAM is for a term of four years before going back to the ballot box.

“I would like to thank BAM for the confidence in nominating me as the president of the association.

“I am indeed humbled and touched. As such, it is with great honour and pleasure I accept the nomination for the presidency,” he said.

“If elected, I will serve BAM and the sport of badminton to the best of my abilities for the supporters of badminton across Malaysia,” he added.

Back in September 2023, Scoop reported that Tengku Zafrul was the frontrunner for the position, however, Norza later decided to stay on to resolve any outstanding matters before handing over the reins.

Tengku Zafrul explained that as he needed to focus on his ministerial role in bringing investments into the country, the timing then probably was not suitable.

However, as his two-term senatorship concludes in December, he will be able to give his all to BAM.

Given his corporate expertise, ministerial experience and strong connections many believe Tengku Zafrul will be able to attract sponsorships, as well as shape the development of the sport.

BAM acting president Datuk V. Subramaniam who earlier today confirmed Tengku Zafrul’s nomination said the elections are tentatively scheduled on May 10.

“We looked at the larger picture of BAM, there is no personal interest here. We believe he is the right person to lead BAM and we will be there to assist.

“BAM has already reached out to Tengku Zafrul and he has agreed,” Subramaniam said. – March 25, 2025
