Tang Jie-Ee Wei split confirmed, BAM to test new pairings

Coaches to test new mixed doubles pairings as BAM reshapes national team strategy

10:58 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has confirmed that national mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei will be split for upcoming tournaments.

This decision aligns with Scoop’s earlier report indicating that their partnership was under review.

BAM acting president and chairman of the performance committee, Datuk V. Subramaniam, stated the coaching panel – led by doubles coaching director Rexy Mainaky and mixed doubles head coach Nova Widianto – had recommended testing new combinations.

“After much deliberation, we have received the report and final recommendation from Rexy and Nova. The pair will be split for upcoming tournaments. We have agreed to allow the coaches some time to try out possible combinations,” Subramaniam said in an official update.

This decision follows discussions within BAM’s performance committee and marks a strategic shift in Malaysia’s mixed doubles setup.

Tang Jie and Ee Wei, among the country’s top mixed doubles pairs, have struggled to produce consistent results in recent tournaments. Their separation paves the way for potential new partnerships aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s mixed doubles prospects.

BAM’s confirmation supports Scoop’s previous report, which speculated that the duo could be headed for a split due to performance concerns and strategic adjustments by the coaching team.

It remains to be seen who Tang Jie and Ee Wei will be paired with in upcoming competitions as BAM explores the best possible combinations.

Separately, when contacted, Subramaniam confirmed that both players will still be included in the longlist for the Sudirman Cup in Xiamen, China, next month, as there is no requirement for them to play as a pair.

“Provided the coaches can find the best combination, then yes, they will be part of the list,” Subramaniam said. – March 28, 2025
