KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria continues his role as the president of the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) for another term after winning it unopposed ahead of the 44th OCM Annual General Assembly on April 19.

Norza, who received 14 nominations from member associations, was the sole candidate for the top post when nominations closed on April 9. His reelection will be formalised during the AGM next week.

A total of 16 candidates submitted valid nominations for 12 office bearer positions for the 2025–2029 term. However, only three of these posts – deputy president, vice presidents and assistant secretary general (male) – will be contested in elections.

“The other nine positions will be decided uncontested,” said returning officer Datuk Seri Mohd Firuz Jaffril, who heads the independent panel overseeing the elections.

The position of deputy president will see a two-way fight between Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad (nominated by football and karate) and Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz (nominated by lawn bowls).

Seven candidates are vying for five vice president slots, including incumbents Datuk Mumtaz Jaffar and Mahaguru Datuk Chong Kim Fatt. Other nominees include Nurul Huda Abdullah, Datuk Mohamad Iruan Zulkefli, Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan, Monteiro Gerard Clair, and Azizul Annuar Adenan.

The only other contest will be for the post of assistant secretary general (male), which will see Ahmad Arif Astaman (nominated by cycling) and Melvin Chia See Oon (nominated by snooker and billiards) go against each other.

The remaining positions have only one nominee each and will be confirmed without contest:

Secretary general: Datuk Mohd Nasir Ali (nominated by weightlifting)
Treasurer: Datuk Ahmad Feisal Ahmad Tajuddin (nominated by cricket)
Assistant secretary general (female): Moira Tan Siew See (nominated by fencing)
Assistant treasurer: Datuk V. Subramaniam (nominated by badminton)

All candidates passed integrity screenings conducted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP), and the Department of Insolvency, confirming their eligibility to contest.

The results of the election will be announced on the same day as the general assembly, with 34 Ordinary Members eligible to vote. – April 11, 2025
