KUALA LUMPUR — The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has given its assurance that there will be no repeat of roof leaks at next month’s Malaysia Masters.
Referring to the leak in January at the Axiata Arena that disrupted the first two days of the Super 1000 Malaysia Open, BAM acting president Datuk V. Subramaniam said the national body has been working closely with the Malaysian Stadium Board (PSM) to ensure that the upcoming Super 500 tournament proceeds without issue.
“The contractors may have overlooked a small section of the roof last time, but the problem has since been rectified.
“It wasn’t a deliberate fault and was beyond our control. When it comes to the weather, all we can do is hope and pray that nothing untoward happens,” said Subramaniam.
He also announced that this year’s prize money for the Super 500 tournament has been increased from US$420,000 to US$475,000.
Tickets for the tournament, scheduled to run from 20–25 May, will go on sale at 11am this Friday (April 18).
Subramaniam confirmed that 15 BAM players will compete in the Malaysia Masters, which has attracted a total of 298 entries.
“Any time there’s a prize money increase, the players are happy. We hope our players will continue to perform well — just like Aaron (Chia) and (Soh) Wooi Yik did in Ningbo — because they certainly have the ability,” he added. – April 16, 2025
