Chong Wei wants BAM reform amid soaring player demands

As BAM prepares for a leadership change, Lee Chong Wei urges structural reform to curb rising player demands and protect the sport’s future

5:32 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR — Datuk Lee Chong Wei has urged the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to prioritise structural reform and long-term athlete development as it prepares for a leadership transition.

The former world number one said he hopes the next BAM president will focus on strengthening internal systems rather than yielding to growing demands from players — some of whom are reportedly earning up to RM2 million a year.

“This is the new trend now — if players don’t get what they want, they want to leave and go pro,” said Chong Wei, who now serves as a National Sports Council (NSC) board member and mentor under the Road to Gold (RTG) programme.

“I’m not saying players shouldn’t make requests — they can. But they must first show results. I’ve always said, some of them are pampered. If they deliver, the association will surely find a way to support them. But now, some haven’t even achieved much and are already asking for more.”

Among the reforms Chong Wei leaned towards was introducing a salary cap for players to ensure financial sustainability and prevent entitlement among younger talents.

He was speaking to reporters at the Youth and Sports Ministry’s Hari Raya Open House at Axiata Arena today.

Chong Wei’s comments come amid ongoing uncertainty over the future of national women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, who have yet to renew their contracts with BAM.

As previously reported by Scoop, the duo are believed to be considering turning independent.

“I hope the new leadership will focus on (improving) facilities and implement a structure that is fair and win-win for athletes and the association,” he said.

“We’re not saying the previous leadership was bad — that would be unfair — but this is a sensitive time. We need a system that helps athletes grow, not one that’s dictated by unrealistic demands.”

Following the departure of Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria after the 2024 Paris Olympics, BAM has confirmed the nomination of Investment, Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, as its next president. Elections are scheduled for May 10.

Acting president Datuk V. Subramaniam is expected to defend his post as deputy president.

On the court, Chong Wei remains optimistic about Malaysia’s prospects at the Sudirman Cup in Xiamen later this month.

“The team list is out, and we can’t change it now. What’s important is team spirit,” he said.

“We have a good chance to top or finish second in our group and reach the quarter-finals. Australia shouldn’t be a problem, but Japan will be tough. Still, I hope for us to maintain our place in division one.”

Malaysia are in Group C alongside Japan, France and Australia for the April 27 to May 4 mixed team championships. — April 21, 2025
