Malaysia could be on its way to shed its ‘sweet’ image, as the Health Ministry is working with hawkers’ associations to reduce the amount of sugar in their food and drink.
The disruption of sugar supply in Sabah and several areas in the country is partly due to the spike in raw sugar prices in the international market, according to Acting Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali.
Malaysians who spoke with Scoop this weekend appeared to be unfazed by reports of a sugar shortage and the apparent increase in prices of the additive food item. Some view sugar as unhealthy, leading them to avoid purchasing it altogether.
Members of the public have been encouraged to lodge reports with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry if they face issues when attempting to purchase controlled items such as sugar.
