A major earthquake has hit Taiwan's east just before 8am (0000 GMT) local time today, triggering tsunami warnings for the self-ruled island as well as parts of southern Japan.
A series of strong earthquakes, with major ones measuring up to 7.6 in magnitude, struck the central Japanese prefecture of Ishikawa today, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.
